Farmers and industry working together for our environment, our health and our farms
by Kristina Fixter

The collection program is part of CropLife Canada's commitment to environmental responsibility and CropLife Canada's stewardshipfirst(TM) program, which promotes safe and responsible use of crop protection products from development through to disposal. "This program provided a safe, effective and cost-free way for farmers to properly dispose of obsolete products," said Lorne Hepworth, President, CropLife Canada.

"Together with farmers, government, stakeholders and industry, we have continued to demonstrate our industry's commitment to the environment and the safety of our communities." "This is an excellent program from a rural, environmental and health standpoint," Saskatchewan Agri-Environmental Advisory Council chairperson and Naicam-area farmer Germain Dauk said. "It shows that farmers, retailers and manufacturers are very responsible regarding the environment and health." The Obsolete Pesticide Collection Campaign is an industry-led stewardship program aimed at collecting and safely disposing of obsolete agricultural pesticides.

CropLife Canada partnered with the Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan Inc. through the Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Saskatchewan (ACAAFS) Program provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The program was also supported by Saskatchewan Ag Retailers, Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food, Saskatchewan Environment and the Canadian Association of Agri-Retailers.

The last obsolete pesticide collection in Saskatchewan, which occurred from 1999-2001, collected 160,410 kgs of obsolete product. "Stewardship has and will always be our number one priority. These types of programs build upon our industry's commitment to environment and public health," says Hepworth. "Thanks to their efforts and support from government, industry, ag-retailers and farmers, we have ensured the proper management of our crop protection products." CropLife Canada is a non-profit trade association representing the manufacturers, developers and distributors of plant science innovations - pest control products and plant biotechnology - for use in agriculture, urban and public health settings.

Its members are committed to sustainable agricultural practices that deliver benefits and solutions to consumers, growers and the environment in which we all live. The Obsolete Pesticide Collection Campaign is an important part of CropLife Canada's Stewardshipfirst(TM) programs that support the responsible use of crop protection and plant biotechnology products throughout their entire lifecycle.

To date, more than 1.2 million kgs of obsolete pesticides have been collected throughout Canada, highlighting the need and tremendous support of this important initiative.
